La Grande Maison
In 2012, Godel Architects were appointed by a developer to re-design a previous planning-approved scheme for the conversion of this listed C19 outbuilding .
The brief required the conversion of a large barn to form three 3-bed cottages complemented by extensive external landscaping. To ensure a sympathetic appearance it was critical to employ traditional techniques and materials to complement the existing buildings’ structure and historical setting.
Internally vaulted ceilings were created, allowing the original roof trusses to be visible , as a reference to the barn’s original architecture and use, and creating dramatic and airy spaces.
High-end finishes were used throughout, including French polished solid oak staircases and timber flooring to living, dining and kitchen areas. The result is an exquisitely restored and thoughtfully converted barn and outbuilding complex, designed to provide every modern convenience within a traditional setting.
The project was completed in 2014.
