Jersey Design Awards 2017 ‘Highly Commended’ – Award for the best refurbishment of an historic building.

The site is located at the far end of La Rue du Cap Verde in St Lawrence and is a Listed Granite house, whose origins are believed to date to the 1500s, with some evidence that some parts date back as far as 1380. Godel Architects were appointed by the clients to remodel and extend the main house, and to design a new garage and guest house, as a second phase.

The historic significance of the existing building demanded that the design to be developed with careful consideration and with liaison with the Historic Environment and Planning Departments, to successfully develop a scheme which meets not only Statutory requirements, but the client’s brief too.

Architecturally, the existing house was sensitively upgraded and improved, the new areas using a clean, modern architectural language, so as to not compete with or visually muddy the prized historic features. The extension was designed to be subservient to the main house and external finishes compliment the original building’s palette, finished with a mixed selection of natural materials including granite, slate and timber. The internal accommodation provides a large open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting area with dramatic and airy, vaulted ceilings and larger expanses of glazing to the south and north to provide a clear connection between front and rear gardens. Externally, the scheme was designed to provide privacy from adjoining properties and to minimise any impact on neighbours.
